THE ENTIRE DAY was turning into one great big bust for Dylan. Why he had thought he could somehow combine seeing his brother and getting Becky alone was beyond him. Not only had his brother pressured him about returning to Newfoundland with him, but Tracy Irvine had refused to leave his side. She had sneaked onto the boat, and Dylan hadn’t the heart to create a scene.

Why had she wanted to come along anyway? This outing had nothing to do with the cruise ship.

And then there was Bear, who kept saying he had come all the way down to the Caribbean to personally convince Dylan to return with him to Newfoundland.

Okay, their dad’s boat had turned out great. All the money he’d sent home to Bear had gone to good use, but that was the extent of his contribution—and any obligation—to Bear’s dream of running whale-watching tours off the islands. There were enough companies to satisfy the tourists, even if one was folding.

Granted, Bear had some good ideas to make their tours different, but Dylan didn’t want to participate. At least not now. It just wasn’t the right time for him to go back, and Bear would understand…eventually. He’d just have to. It wasn’t as if he was leaving his brother high and dry. Bear was perfectly capable of running the operation himself, or finding another partner if he wanted to. He didn’t need Dylan. Not really. Bear merely liked the idea of both of them working on their dad’s boat again, telling him over and over how Dad would have wanted it that way.

A pang of sadness washed over Dylan.

It was true. Their dad would have liked them to work together, and he would have wanted them to take care of their mom, which Dylan was doing, at least financially. But he hadn’t seen her in so long her face was slipping from memory.

There was a grain of truth in Bear’s arguments, he had to admit. Part of him wanted to help Bear with that whale-watching business more than anything, but the other part of him couldn’t face the hardships they would encounter, at least in the beginning. Any new business took time to become solvent. Dylan had more than paid his dues in life, and he just did not want to ever be poor again.

Of course, the way he’d been acting around Becky could get him fired, and working with Bear might become a necessity. Not to mention this unauthorized expedition. If Tracy so much as hinted at it to Patti, he could be fired on the spot.

Acting on his emotions had taken him down a dangerous path.

“We should be out over the ridge in about fifteen minutes,” Bear announced over a loudspeaker.

“Tracy, if you could help Laura get ready, that would be great,” Dylan said. “We need to be back aboard Alexandra’s Dream in about three hours, so that doesn’t give us much time.”

“Sure,” Tracy agreed without hesitation in an overly cheerful voice. “And I’ll stay aboard with Sarah when you guys go in.
